How to Tell a Quality Streetwear T-Shirt by Its Fabric, Not Its Price Tag
Price alone tells you almost nothing about fabric quality in streetwear — here's what actually does.
GSM is the single most useful number
Grams per square metre tells you how heavy and substantial the fabric is. Anything meaningfully below 180 GSM tends to feel thin and see-through when stretched; heavyweight streetwear cotton typically sits well above that.
Feel the fabric, don't just look at it
A heavier cotton has visible structure and doesn't cling or show every seam underneath when worn. If a product photo alone is doing all the convincing, that's worth noticing.
Check how the hem and seams are finished
Double-stitched hems and reinforced shoulder seams are a sign of construction quality that has nothing to do with the graphic or the price point — cheap fabric with expensive branding is still cheap fabric.
Wash behaviour is the real test
A quality heavyweight cotton tee holds its shape and colour after multiple washes rather than shrinking noticeably or fading within a month. If a brand states GSM and fabric composition upfront, that's a brand willing to be checked against that claim later.
