Office-Appropriate T-Shirts: When and How to Wear Them
Many workplaces now allow t-shirts in smart-casual or casual settings. Here's how to wear them without looking underdressed.
When It's Okay
If your office allows "smart casual" or "business casual," a t-shirt can work as a base when it's clean, solid or subtly patterned, and well-fitted. Avoid logos, graphics, and anything too tight or too sloppy.
How to Make It Work
Always pair with tailored elements: structured trousers, a blazer, or a cardigan. Tuck the tee for a neater line. Choose neutral or muted colors. Footwear should be polished—loafers, oxfords, or minimal leather sneakers.
When to Skip the Tee
Client meetings, formal events, and conservative offices may still expect a collared shirt. When in doubt, layer a blazer over the tee and have a collar option available. Read the room and dress for the most formal person in it.
Shop office-ready tees that pair with blazers.
